Tolls in Germany

There has recently been a toll reform that should come into force in autumn 2023 in the German nation.

Here are some of the main new features:

From 1 December 2023, the truck toll in Germany and then from 1 January 2024 in Austria will be expanded to include a CO₂ tax. In Germany, for example, a toll of 200 euros will be added for each tonne of CO₂. Additional costs may apply depending on the CO₂ emission class of the vehicle.

On July 1, 2024, according to the federal government's bill, the toll will be extended to vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes. Today the toll only applies to vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes. Craft businesses should be exempt.

Zero-emission trucks are exempt from tolls until the end of 2025, after which only 25 percent of the partial toll will be charged for infrastructure costs.

Details and any exceptions regarding who is subject to the toll and how the settlement is carried out are still being finalized. This is why the major toll service providers in Europe are closely monitoring developments to provide all relevant updates.
